When I was young, my parents had a horse that we spent a lot of time with. I was the younger than my sister, so I was always the last to ride. Riding was great, in spite of my mother’s constant guidance (that would prove to make me a fairly good rider later on). I would climb up into the saddle, with a little help because I was too short to reach the stirrups on my own, and I would imagine to be this princess-like girl, running through a field on my white horse having an adventure. I was in a fenced-in corral, but nonetheless, I could escape in my mind and be a special kind of person who I pictured at the time to be a princess. I could let my mind wander while I rode because Gambit was always too wore out to spook or act up because he had been ridden at length by my mom and sister…he wasn’t very exciting by the time that I took my turn. “But if I had my OWN horse…the things that I could do!” It was just a dream, but I enjoyed the idea.
Not more than a couple of years after I began to wish that I had a horse of my very own, my mom spotted a horse across the street from the barn out in a field. I asked her what she was looking at and she asked me if I wanted to take a walk with her to go see a horse. The horse was white…she was dirty, but she was perfect. Turns out that this beautiful mare was for sale, and equally as important, my parents had decided to buy her for me! I was elated! I just couldn’t believe my good luck; she was just what I had been wishing for! My very own white horse, who I named very appropriately Destiny. I was around 10 years old, but I knew what destiny meant and I was sure that God had taken my wish and made it real, just for me!
Is that what destiny means; making a wish and having God make it happen? To a child it seems fitting, but as an adult, we might see it a bit differently. Maybe destiny is just “those things that are out of our control that are meant to happen”. But are there things that are out of our control that are just meant to be? If you study the law of attraction or anything of the like, you are probably thinking, “But we create our own reality…”
So let’s say that we do create our reality, does that mean that we are consciously creating everything? Wouldn’t that mean that life would never surprise you and you would have everything you desire and problems wouldn’t exist? Hmph. This had me thinking…
I remember going to a “gallery” to see psychic medium named John Edwards a few years back and he talked about people asking him about destiny versus free will. I remember his response because it made sense to me at the time. “I think of destiny as certain things in your life that are meant to happen. Picture a timeline with points on it; A, B, C, D and so on. Those points would be significant events that are ’mapped’ out to happen…the spaces between those points is where your free will is…how you get to the next point, how long it takes you, and so forth…” Those may not be his exact words, but they are close. So, is he correct?
I think John Edwards explanation of destiny vs. free will is accurate, but it left me wondering “How do I know what I can control and what I can’t? Will I ever know, even in hindsight?” This also got me thinking…
What I have learned recently is that we are creating our reality, but the “I” part of me is not necessarily the part of me that is creating everything. Sure, I do have a say in my life, but there are also other parts of me, like my Soul, who has made choices to experience certain things that I am not consciously aware of. And from my understanding, if my Soul chooses a specific experience, it is most likely going to happen, in spite of my conscious free will. This would make me experience my Soul’s choices as if those things are “destined”! You might feel more inclined to say that God has certain “plans” for you, but either way we are really talking about the same thing; some other aspect of life is determining certain events in your life. But where does free will sit then?
To me, free will is having the drive and ability to acknowledge that there is a part of me behind the scenes that is influencing my life and also having the ability to unify with that part of me so as to open up the opportunity to express my desires and hopefully have that part of me consider those desires when that part of me is creating certain things in my life. I think your Soul would love to have you communicate with it so that you can work together to create the experiences that both of you want to have! What an amazing thought! “There’s a part of me called my Soul who wants to experience certain things and if I can connect with it more directly, we can work together?” Yes! This is what free will is, using your own ability to get in touch with the deeper part of yourself so that your entire being supports your desires! It is not always easy admitting that we always had a choice when we look back at something that happened that was undesirable or painful, but by being honest with yourself you can start to open up to the mystical areas of your life and control your own “destiny”!

seems to me that the only control we have is our response to the occurrences in our life, we can accept them and move on or, we can choose to acknowledge them and move away from them. Regardless, acknowledging the influences on our path home is really important. They form us and give guidance along the way. Don’t you think?
Hi Joann, It is easy to think that we do not have control over things in our lives, but the “outside the box” thinking is that we do; we are either creating or reacting. If you understand how your consciousness works, you can then step into creating more and more of your life. This is like the principles of the Law of Attraction. Creating is powerful, reacting is acting as if you are powerless. Yes, we can respond to circumstances that seem out of our control, but we can respond from the creating place instead of the reacting place. Reacting keeps patterns running in our lives, while true creating (consciously) is breaking the patterns and creating change.
Thanks for your comment!
I like this idea that we can control this. I have been looking to create that white horse in my life! That was a gift given to you to see what we can actually create so you know you can create it now rather than having to wait for destiny. Sometimes it takes a while to understand things that happen in our past, but it eventually unfolds. I have had some amazing experiences happen in my past and with your help I am on my way to changing this limited reality into a more beautiful one to create the experiences I would have once thought impossible but now are def possible.
